How to Reset a NordicTrack Treadmill

Most "reset" problems on a NordicTrack are one of three things: a machine that is not powered up in the right order, a tripped reset breaker on the frame, or a console that needs restarting. Here is how to tell which, what to do about each, and where the manual has to take over.

Safety and scope. Unplug the treadmill at the wall before removing any cover, the motor hood or the console, and before reaching under the belt. The safety key stops the belt; it does not isolate the machine. Never bypass or defeat the safety key. Procedures differ by model and console software, so where this page says to follow your manual or NordicTrack support, do β€” we have not guessed at menu paths or button sequences that vary between machines. If you smell burning, see sparks, or the breaker trips repeatedly, stop and get it looked at.

NordicTrack has sold a great many treadmills across several console generations, from simple LED displays to large iFIT touchscreens, and the exact buttons and menus differ between them. What does not differ much is the hardware around the console: a power switch near the cord at the front of the base, a safety key, and on many models a reset breaker beside the power switch. Start there. Most machines that seem to need a reset need one of those three things checked.

1. How to Reset a NordicTrack Treadmill: The Short Answer

To reset a NordicTrack treadmill, switch it off at the power switch on the front of the base, unplug it from the wall, wait a minute or so, then plug it back in, switch it on and insert the safety key. That power cycle clears most frozen consoles and odd behaviour. If the machine is completely dead, look beside the power switch for areset button or circuit breaker β€” many NordicTrack models have one β€” and press it firmly in.

A factory reset of the touchscreen console is a different, bigger step: it erases saved settings and user data and returns the software to its original state. Many touchscreen models offer one through a settings or maintenance menu, but the path differs by model and software version. Follow the manual for your model or NordicTrack support rather than a generic set of instructions.

If the console boots normally but the belt will not move, a reset is rarely the fix. That is a separate fault with its own checks, covered in our guide to atreadmill that turns on but the belt won't move.

2. How to Turn On a NordicTrack Treadmill

Turning one on is not complicated, but the order matters, and a surprising number of "it will not turn on" problems are one step missed.

1. Plug it into a grounded wall outlet. Directly into the wall, not through an extension lead or a multi-way adapter. Treadmill motors draw a large current at start-up, and extension leads cause voltage drop, heat and nuisance trips. Your manual will state the circuit requirements and whether a surge protector is recommended; follow it. Ourtreadmill electricity guideexplains why the circuit matters.

2. Find the power switch. On NordicTrack treadmills it is usually on the front of the base, near where the power cord enters the frame, not on the console. Switch it to the on position.

3. Insert the safety key. The key goes into its slot on the console, and on most models the console will not power up fully, or will not allow the belt to start, without it. Clip the other end to your clothing before you start walking.

4. Give the console time. A simple LED console lights almost immediately. A touchscreen console is a small computer and can take a minute or more to boot, longer if it is installing a software update. Let it finish; switching off in the middle of an update is one of the few ways to cause a genuine software problem.

5. Choose a workout and press start. On touchscreen models you may need to select a manual workout or sign in before the start control is available. The belt will begin at a low speed.

If nothing lights at all after this sequence, work through the next two sections before assuming anything has failed.

3. The Reset Button or Circuit Breaker

Many NordicTrack treadmills have a small reset button or circuit breaker beside the power switch at the front of the base. It is overcurrent protection built into the machine, separate from the breaker in your household panel, and many owners never know it is there until it trips.

Unplug the machine, then look closely at the area around the power switch and cord inlet. You are looking for a small button, sometimes labelled reset, sometimes recessed into the plastic. When it has tripped it typically stands slightly proud of its normal position. Press it firmly in until it clicks and stays, plug back in, and switch on. Not every model has one in the same place; on some the protection is elsewhere, and the manual's parts diagram will show it.

One trip is unremarkable β€” a momentary overload, a start-up spike. A reset that trips again and again is telling you something, and pressing it repeatedly is not a fix. The usual causes are a dry deck raising motor current, a machine sharing a circuit with other heavy loads, or an electrical fault developing. Our guide to atreadmill that trips the breakerworks through those in order.

4. If It Still Will Not Turn On

If the machine is still dark after the power switch, the safety key and the reset button, the cause is almost always one of a short list, and it applies to NordicTrack as much as to any brand.

  • The outlet. Plug a lamp into the same outlet. GFCI outlets in basements and garages trip silently, and one upstream can kill other outlets on the circuit.
  • The household breaker. A tripped breaker can sit in a middle position that looks on. Switch it fully off and on again.
  • The safety key. Reseat it firmly. Keys get lost and swapped between machines; a key from another treadmill may not work.
  • The power cord. Unplugged, inspect it along its length and at the inlet on the frame for damage or a loose connection.
  • A fuse or the controller board. Past this point you are into internal components, which is where a service call or NordicTrack support comes in, particularly if the machine is under warranty.

The full sequence, including what each check rules out, is in ourtreadmill won't turn on guide. A machine that died during a storm has often taken a surge, and that page covers what that usually means.

5. The Soft Reset: A Proper Power Cycle

A soft reset is simply restarting the machine cleanly, and it fixes more than you would expect: a frozen touchscreen, a console that will not respond to buttons, a display showing nonsense, a machine that has lost its Wi-Fi connection, or a belt that refuses to start after the console was left on for a long time.

Remove the safety key and switch off at the power switch on the base. Switching off at the console, if it has a sleep or off option, is not the same thing.

Unplug the cord from the wall and leave it unplugged for about a minute. This lets the electronics fully discharge, which is the part a quick off-and-on at the switch can miss.

Plug back in, switch on, insert the key, and let the console boot completely before touching anything. On touchscreen models, give it time to reconnect to the network and check for updates.

If the same fault returns after a clean power cycle, note exactly what happens β€” any message or error code on the screen, any noise, whether the belt moves β€” because that is what NordicTrack support or a technician will ask for. Do not keep power cycling a machine that is tripping, smelling hot or behaving erratically under load; our guide to a treadmill that shuts off by itselfcovers that pattern.

6. Factory Resetting the Console

Many touchscreen NordicTrack consoles can be returned to factory settings, usually through a settings, maintenance or service area of the console software. It is a legitimate fix for persistent software problems that survive a power cycle β€” a console stuck in a loop, an app that will not load, settings that have become corrupted β€” and it is the right thing to do before selling or passing the machine on.

We are deliberately not giving a menu path or button sequence here. The route differs between console generations and changes with software updates, and a wrong sequence on some consoles can put you into service menus you did not intend to enter. Use the manual for your exact model, or NordicTrack's support pages and support team, who can identify your console from the model number.

Before you do it, know what it costs you. A factory reset generally removes saved user profiles, workout history stored on the machine, network settings and account login, so you will need your Wi-Fi password and your iFIT or account details afterwards. Workout history stored in your online account is usually kept on the account rather than the machine, but check. The console may also need to download software updates again once it is back online, which can take a while; leave it powered on and connected until it finishes.

If a factory reset does not fix the problem, the issue is more likely hardware than software, and it is a support conversation rather than another reset.

7. Find Your Model Number First

Almost every useful instruction for a NordicTrack treadmill depends on knowing exactly which machine you have. Names like Commercial 1750 or C 990 have been reused across revisions with different consoles, so the name alone is not enough to find the right manual or support article.

The model number and serial number are printed on a decal on the frame; the manual shows where on your machine, and it is commonly near the front of the base. Write both down, photograph the decal, and keep the photograph somewhere you will find it. With the model number you can download the correct manual from NordicTrack's website and get accurate answers from support. OurNordicTrack brand guideexplains how the current range is organised if you are trying to work out which tier you own.

8. When the Screen Boots but the Belt Will Not Move

This is the fault most often mistaken for something a reset will cure. The console lights, accepts the start command, and the belt does not move β€” or it does not even offer you a start button.

Check the free causes first. Is the safety key fully seated? A partially seated key can let the console power up while keeping the motor disabled. Has a workout actually been started, or is the console waiting for you to choose one or sign in? Is the speed set above zero? Is something jammed under the belt? Some consoles also have a display or demonstration mode in which the screen runs but the belt will not start; if yours is behaving like a shop display, the manual explains how to leave it.

Is there an error message or code? Write it down exactly. Error codes differ between console generations and we will not guess at their meanings; the manual or NordicTrack support will tell you what yours means, and it shortens a service call considerably.

Listen. A motor that hums without turning, a click with no movement, or complete silence each point toward different parts of the drive. Our guide to abelt that won't moveuses that sound to narrow down the cause, and explains which of the possible faults are owner repairs and which are not.

9. Calibration: When Speed or Incline Is Wrong

If the machine runs but the incline does not match what the console says, the incline stops at the wrong place, or the console reports an incline fault, the fix is often a calibration rather than a reset. Many NordicTrack models include an incline calibration routine in the console's maintenance or settings options, during which the deck runs through its full range so the console relearns the end points.

Again, the way to start it differs by model, so follow the manual. Clear the area around and under the treadmill before running it, keep everyone off the belt, and keep pets and children away, because the deck moves on its own during the routine. Let it complete without interruption.

Speed that reads wrongly or surges is less commonly a calibration matter and more often a speed sensor, drive or tension issue. If the belt hesitates under your weight, check lubrication and belt tension before anything electronic; ourtreadmill troubleshooting guidesorts symptoms by likely cause.

10. How to Take Apart a NordicTrack Treadmill

Most people asking how to take apart a NordicTrack treadmill are moving it, and the honest answer is that you usually need to take apart much less than you think.

Folding models: fold it. Many NordicTrack treadmills fold, often with a hydraulic assist that lowers the deck gently. Unplug the machine, remove the safety key, lower the incline to zero first if it has power, then fold the deck up until the latch engages fully. Check the lock by trying to lower the deck gently; if the latch is worn or will not hold, do not move the machine folded. A strap around the folded deck and upright is cheap insurance.

Remove the console and uprights only if you need to, and only as the manual describes. For a non-folding model, or for a route too narrow for the assembled machine, the process is broadly the assembly instructions in reverse. The console cable usually runs up through an upright to a connector: unplug it at the connector rather than pulling the wire, and do not let the upright pinch it as you lift it away. Photograph each stage, label the uprights left and right, and put each set of bolts in a labelled bag taped to the part it came from.

Leave the motor hood and electronics alone. Nothing under the motor hood needs removing to move the machine, and it is where the controller board and mains wiring live. If you are opening the hood for cleaning, unplug first; our guide tovacuuming the motor compartmentcovers doing that safely. If the machine is under warranty, check the terms before dismantling more than the manual describes.

NordicTrack treadmills are heavy, with most of the weight at the motor end, so plan on at least two people and three for stairs. The full process β€” measuring the route, dollies, stairs, loading a van and the checks after the move β€” is in our guide onhow to move a treadmill.

11. After Moving or Reassembly

A treadmill that has been moved or partly dismantled deserves a short check before anyone runs on it, and several apparent faults after a move are simply things not put back properly.

If it has been somewhere cold, let it reach room temperature before powering up. Level it on its feet. Check every bolt you removed is back and tight, and that the console cable connector is fully seated β€” a loose console connection is a common cause of a dead or erratic console after reassembly. Then power up in the usual order: wall outlet, power switch, safety key.

Run the belt empty at a low speed for a couple of minutes and watch that it stays centred, then walk on it slowly and check it does not hesitate. Run the incline through its range. If the incline reads wrongly after a move, a calibration is often all it needs. If the console asks to update, let it.

12. When to Stop and Call NordicTrack Support

Power cycling, the reset button and the free checks are all reasonable for any owner. Some things are not, and continuing past them risks the machine, the warranty or you.

Contact NordicTrack support or a qualified technician if the reset breaker or your household breaker trips repeatedly, if you smell burning or hot plastic, if the belt moves when it should not or keeps moving after the safety key is pulled, if the console shows an error code that the manual says needs service, or if a factory reset does not fix a software problem. Have the model and serial numbers ready, along with a clear description of what happens and any error message.

Check your warranty status before paying for a repair. NordicTrack's coverage is typically split into separate terms for the frame, parts and labour, and some faults that look serious are covered. And if you are weighing up whether a touchscreen machine is right for you in the long run, our list of thebest treadmills without subscriptionscovers the simpler alternative.

ProForm machines share the same parent company and much of the same console behaviour; owners of those should see our ProForm treadmill troubleshooting guide.

13. The Bottom Line on Resetting a NordicTrack

Power it up in the right order: grounded wall outlet with no extension lead, power switch on the front of the base, then the safety key, and give a touchscreen console time to boot.

To reset it, power cycle properly β€” switch off, unplug, wait about a minute, restart. If it is dead, look for a reset button beside the power switch. If it trips repeatedly, stop pressing it and find out why.

For a factory reset, calibration or disassembly, follow the manual for your exact model, which you can find from the model number on the frame decal. Procedures vary between console generations, and NordicTrack support can confirm the right one.

14. Frequently Asked Questions

How do you reset a NordicTrack treadmill?

Switch it off at the power switch on the front of the base, unplug it from the wall, wait about a minute, then plug in, switch on and insert the safety key. If the machine is completely dead, look beside the power switch for a reset button or circuit breaker, which many models have, and press it firmly in. A full factory reset of the console is a separate step done through the console software; follow your model's manual or NordicTrack support for it.

How do you turn on a NordicTrack treadmill?

Plug it directly into a grounded wall outlet without an extension lead, switch on the power switch at the front of the base near the cord, and insert the safety key into the console. A touchscreen console can take a minute or more to boot. Then select a workout and press start.

How do you turn on a NordicTrack treadmill if nothing happens?

Check the safety key is fully seated, press in the reset button beside the power switch if your model has one, confirm the outlet works with a lamp, and check the household breaker and any GFCI outlet on the circuit. If it is still dead, the cause is likely internal and worth a call to NordicTrack support, especially under warranty.

Where is the reset button on a NordicTrack treadmill?

On many NordicTrack treadmills it is a small button or circuit breaker beside the power switch at the front of the base, near where the cord enters. When tripped it usually stands slightly proud. Not every model is the same, so check the parts diagram in your manual if you cannot find it.

How do you take apart a NordicTrack treadmill?

For moving, usually as little as possible: unplug it, remove the safety key, and fold and lock the deck if it folds. If you must remove the console and uprights, follow your manual's assembly steps in reverse, unplug the console cable at its connector, and bag and label every bolt. Leave the motor hood and electronics alone unless the manual says otherwise.

Will a factory reset delete my NordicTrack workouts?

It generally removes data stored on the console, including user profiles, network settings and the account login. Workout history saved to your online account is usually kept on the account, but confirm before resetting. Have your Wi-Fi password and account details ready to set it up again.

Common Mistakes When Resetting a NordicTrack

Most of these waste an afternoon; one of them can cause the problem you were trying to fix.

Power cycling at the switch without unplugging

Flicking the power switch off and straight back on does not always let the electronics fully discharge. Switch off, unplug at the wall, wait about a minute, then restart. It is the difference between a reset and a blink.

Pressing the reset breaker again and again

One trip is normal. A reset button that trips repeatedly is protecting the machine from an overload β€” often a dry deck, a shared circuit or a developing fault. Repeatedly resetting it into that fault can turn a cheap problem into a controller board. Find the cause.

Following a generic menu path for a factory reset

Console software differs between NordicTrack generations and changes with updates. A sequence copied from a video about a different model can land you in service menus or simply not work. Use your model number to find the correct manual, or ask NordicTrack support.

Switching off during a software update

Touchscreen consoles update themselves, sometimes at boot, and an update can take a while. Interrupting it is one of the few ways to create a genuine software fault. If the console says it is updating, leave it powered on and connected until it finishes.

The Bottom Line

Turn it on in order β€” wall outlet, power switch on the base, safety key β€” and reset it with a proper power cycle: off, unplugged, a minute, back on. Dead? Check the reset button by the switch, thenthe usual suspects.

Factory resets, calibration and disassembly follow the manualfor your exact model. If the console boots but the belt will not move, that is adifferent faulta reset will not cure.
