Treadmills by budget, and what each tier buys
Treadmill quality does not rise smoothly with price. It steps, and the steps are not where the marketing suggests they are.
The most useful thing to know before setting a treadmill budget is where the cliffs fall. Below roughly $800 the constraint is the motor and the deck: continuous-duty ratings drop under 2.5 CHP, decks shorten to 55 inches or less, and both limit the machine to walking and light jogging regardless of what the box claims. That is a genuine ceiling, not a matter of taste.
Between about $1,000 and $1,800 sits the widest gap between the best and worst machines at the same price, because it is the band where brands choose between spending on the motor, the screen, or the subscription ecosystem. Two treadmills at $1,400 can differ by a full horsepower of continuous-duty rating and 5 inches of deck length.
