Academy Sports Treadmills: What to Know Before You Buy
Academy Sports + Outdoors is a Texas-based sporting goods chain with stores across the South and Southeast and a treadmill range that runs from $200 walking pads to $5,000 NordicTrack machines. Here is what it sells, how a treadmill reaches your home, what its return and price-match rules actually say, and how its prices compared with buying direct on the day we checked.

On the details below. This site is independent and not affiliated with Academy Sports + Outdoors or any brand it sells. Brands, prices and policies were read on academy.com on 20 October 2026, and store, return, price-match and card details were cross-checked against independent reporting and the card issuer's announcement. Where we could find no independent source, we say the detail comes from Academy alone. Ranges, fulfilment options and policies change and can differ by product, store and ZIP code, so confirm the current terms on the product page or with the store before you buy. We have not tested the machines mentioned here.
In This Guide
Academy Sports + Outdoors sells treadmills in its stores and on academy.com, from budget walking pads to NordicTrack's top home machines. This page sets out what we could confirm on academy.com on 20 October 2026 β the brands listed and their prices, how bulky items are delivered, the assembly offer, the return window and its conditions, the price-match rules and the store credit card β with company facts cross-checked against independent sources. Individual prices change weekly, so treat the figures as a dated snapshot rather than a quote.
1. Should You Buy a Treadmill at Academy Sports? The Short Answer
Academy is a reasonable place to buy a mainstream home treadmill, particularly if you live near one of its stores in the South or Southeast; its price match, which beats a qualifying competitor's price by 5%, is unusually generous, but its 60-day return policy expects the machine back unused and in its original packaging. On 20 October 2026 academy.com listed treadmills and walking pads from NordicTrack, ProForm, Bowflex, Echelon, Sunny Health & Fitness, XTERRA, UREVO, WalkingPad, CENTR, Assault Fitness, adidas and a handful of other brands, at listed prices from $199.99 to $4,999.99 for motorized machines.
Three things matter more at Academy than the sticker price. First, large treadmills ship by Academy's bulk carrier, and the level of delivery you pick β to the door, inside the main entrance or to the room β changes what happens on the day. Second, Academy does not ship to California, Alaska or Hawaii, so outside the contiguous states minus California it is not an option at all. Third, the return rules are written for unused goods, so the in-store test matters: find out whether you like the machine before it is built in your spare room.
Academy's prices are not consistently lower or higher than buying elsewhere. On the day we checked, one NordicTrack model was $300 cheaper at Academy than on NordicTrack's own site and another was $400 dearer. Compare the exact model number and the delivered price every time. Our treadmill buying guidecovers what separates a good machine from a poor one.
2. What Is Academy Sports + Outdoors, and Where Are the Stores?
Academy Sports + Outdoors is a publicly listed sporting goods and outdoor retailer headquartered in Katy, Texas, just west of Houston. The company's own history traces it to a tire shop that Max Gochman opened in San Antonio in 1938, which moved into military surplus and then sporting goods; it took its current name in 1995. Its stores are large-format and sell everything from hunting, fishing and camping gear to footwear, team sports, grills and fitness equipment.
Academy describes itself as operating more than 300 stores in 21 states, and independent reporting on its 2025 results put the count at 322 stores in 21 states before this year's openings. Its store directory, checked on 20 October 2026, listed the same 21 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Texas dominates: well over a third of the store pages in Academy's directory are Texan, with Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina and Tennessee next. Maryland had a single store. The directory listed roughly 345 individual store pages, a figure that may include newly opened or announced locations, so treat it as approximate; the company has said it plans 20 to 25 openings in fiscal 2026.
For a treadmill buyer that footprint decides how useful Academy is. If you live in Texas, the Gulf states or the Southeast, there is probably a store close enough to try a machine before you buy it. In the Northeast, the upper Midwest or the West, Academy is an online retailer for you β and in California it is not one at all, because academy.com does not ship there.
3. Which Treadmill Brands Does Academy Sell?
On 20 October 2026 Academy's treadmill category showed 94 items across four pages, including a few accessories (a treadmill mat and a walking pad handrail) and two stair steppers. The treadmills and walking pads came from the brands below. The range changes through the year and not every model is stocked in every store, so treat this as a snapshot of the website.

The centre of gravity is iFIT's two brands, NordicTrack and ProForm, which between them made up about a quarter of the listings, and Sunny Health & Fitness, which had the most models of any single brand. Academy's own category text names ProForm, NordicTrack, Reebok and Sunny Health & Fitness as its headline brands. What is missing is just as telling: there was no Sole, Horizon, Landice or commercial club brand, so if your shortlist runs to those you will be buying elsewhere.
Several of the NordicTrack listings use names that are easy to confuse β "T Series 5" and "T 5.0 S", for example, appeared as separate products at the same price. Our guide to theNordicTrack T Seriesexplains the line-up. Always match the full item number on the Academy page (it is listed under "about this product") with the manufacturer's model number before you compare prices or ask for a price match.
4. How Much Do Treadmills Cost at Academy?
Listed prices for motorized treadmills and walking pads on academy.com ran from $199.99 (a UREVO under-desk walking pad) to $4,999.99 (the NordicTrack Ultra 3) on 20 October 2026. The single most expensive item in the category was the non-motorized Centr x HYROX curved treadmill at $6,999.99. Roughly, the listings fell into four tiers:
- Under $500: walking pads from UREVO, Sunny, Lifepro and Echelon, a couple of manual or magnetic treadmills, and entry folding machines such as the ProForm Cadence 4.0. These suit walking far more than running.
- $500 to $1,000: the busiest tier β entry NordicTrack T Series and ProForm Carbon models, most XTERRA and Sunny folding machines, adidas, Reebok and Schwinn.
- $1,000 to $2,000: mid-range NordicTrack and ProForm, Bowflex, the larger Echelon models, CENTR and WalkingPad's larger machines.
- Over $2,000: NordicTrack's Elite X16i, X22i and Ultra 3, the AssaultRunner Pro and the top Sunny and Echelon machines.
Two pricing details are specific to Academy. Some listings show a manufacturer's suggested price struck through next to Academy's price β several XTERRA models were $200 to $700 below the MSRP shown β and one Sunny machine was marked as a Hot Deal at $399.99, down from $499.99. And two Bowflex models showed a price ($2,299.00 for the Bowflex 10 and $2,999.00 for the 22) marked "Our Price In Cart", with a note that the manufacturer had asked Academy not to share the price until the item is in your cart. That is a normal minimum-advertised-price arrangement, not a hidden fee, but it means the figure on the listing may not be what you pay; add the machine to the cart before you compare it.
For what each of those tiers typically buys in motor, deck and frame, seehow much a treadmill costs.
5. Can You Try a Treadmill at an Academy Store?
The best reason to buy from a store chain is that you can stand on the machine first, and Academy's stores have fitness departments. Whether a particular treadmill is on the floor, though, varies by store, and the website is the larger range. On the product pages we checked, Academy offers a "Find availability by selecting a store" option; use it, and then call the store to ask whether the model is assembled on the floor rather than only boxed in the back.
When you get there, test properly. A ten-minute session tells you far more than pressing start for thirty seconds:
- Wear your own shoes and clothes you can jog in.
- Walk, then run at the speeds you will really use. A deck that feels roomy at walking pace can feel short once your stride lengthens.
- Use the incline through the range you expect to use, and notice how quickly it responds.
- Listen and feel for motor noise, frame flex and console shake at speed.
- Fold and unfold it yourself if it folds, and check how heavy it is to move.
Our in-store treadmill testsets out the full protocol. Before you leave, photograph the spec card and the model number on the frame, and check that the machine you order has the same item number. Treadmill names are reused across model years with real changes underneath.
At Academy the in-store test matters more than usual, because the return policy (below) is written for unused goods. Finding out that a machine is too loud or too short for you after it has been delivered and built is the expensive way to learn.
6. How Does Academy Deliver a Treadmill?
Most full-size treadmills on academy.com do not travel by parcel carrier. The product pages we checked said they ship "via Academy's Bulk Carrier Service" and that bulk orders cannot go to a PO Box or a military APO/FPO/DPO address. Academy's shipping help page, checked on 20 October 2026, says heavy or bulky items go by a freight trucking company, usually leave the distribution centre within one business day and arrive within 7 to 14 business days. It lists three delivery levels where your order qualifies:
- Basic Delivery: the carrier delivers to your door, with no appointment or signature required.
- Scheduled Delivery: the carrier contacts you to book a delivery within the main entrance of your home.
- Room of Choice: the carrier contacts you to book delivery to the room you choose.
The help page does not give prices for the three levels, and the shipping cost is calculated at checkout from your address, the item's size and weight and the method. Academy's free shipping offers (orders over $50, $25 when signed in to its free loyalty programme, or no minimum with its credit card) exclude large, heavy and bulk items, so do not assume a treadmill ships free. We could not find an independent source describing the delivery tiers, so this section rests on Academy's own pages; check the options and their cost at checkout for your ZIP code.
For a box that can weigh as much as an adult, the difference between "to your door" and "to the room" is the whole job. If you choose basic delivery, plan who will carry the box in and up any stairs. Our treadmill delivery guideexplains what each level usually means on the day, andhow much a treadmill weighsgives typical boxed weights.
Some items ship directly from the brand rather than from Academy. Academy flags these with a banner saying the item may ship from a different location; once such an order has been passed to the vendor it cannot be switched to store pick-up or a different address, and it can only be cancelled before the vendor accepts it. Measure the room and the route to it before ordering β the space requirements guidecovers the clearances.
7. Does Academy Assemble Treadmills?
Sometimes. Academy's in-store services page, checked on 20 October 2026, says that when you buy an oversized item it will "assist with free assembly for in-store pickup or offer home delivery", and it names select treadmills among the products covered. In other words, the free assembly offer is tied to picking the machine up from a store, and it applies to some treadmills rather than all of them.
That is worth thinking through before you rely on it. An assembled full-size treadmill is large, heavy and awkward, and it may not fit in your vehicle or through your front door in one piece; a store-built walking pad or compact folder is a different matter. On the product pages we checked for full-size NordicTrack, Bowflex and Sunny machines, store pick-up was not available for the default store, and every specification list we read said "Assembly Required: Yes". Ask the store whether your model qualifies, and whether you would be collecting it built or boxed.
We did not see an in-home assembly add-on on the Academy product pages we checked. If you are having the machine delivered, you have three options: check whether the brand sells its own assembly service (NordicTrack, for example, offers delivery, assembly and haul-away for an extra charge when you buy direct), book a local fitness technician or assembly service, or do it yourself. Most home treadmills arrive with the heavy base pre-built and need the uprights, console and handrails attaching β a two-person job of an hour or two. Ourtreadmill assembly guidesets out the job.
8. What Is Academy's Return Policy on Treadmills?
Academy's return policy, as published on academy.com on 20 October 2026, accepts returns of "most unused, new condition items within 60 days of purchase" and refunds to the original form of payment. Fitness equipment is not on its list of excluded or restricted categories, which covers firearms, hunting equipment, fuel-powered items, boats, trading cards and some electronics. An independent retail guide published in 2026 gives the same 60-day window for most unused items in their original packaging. For a treadmill, the conditions are what matter:
- Resalable, in the original packaging. Except where there is a product defect, damage in transit or "a valid product performance issue", returned merchandise must be resalable with no visible wear or usage, in its original packaging and with all paperwork, parts and accessories.
- Bulk-shipped items need Customer Care. Online orders can normally be returned to any store or by mail to Academy's returns centre in Katy, Texas, but the policy says that if you want to return a purchase "requiring special or bulk shipping", you should contact Customer Care. It does not say how collection works or what it costs.
- Picked up in store, returned in store. Items bought online and collected from a store must be returned to a store, not by carrier.
- Charges may not come back. Online refunds are of the purchase price "less other academy.com charges" unless you are eligible for a refund of those charges, so assume the delivery fee may not be refunded.
Read together, those terms mean a treadmill that has been assembled, used and had its box thrown away is unlikely to qualify for an ordinary change-of-mind return, while one that arrives damaged or does not work properly falls under the defect and performance exceptions. Keep the box and packing material until you are sure, and before buying ask Customer Care how a bulk item return would physically happen and whether any fee applies. One grey area: Academy limits returns of opened electronics to exchanges, and it is not clear from the policy whether a treadmill with a built-in touchscreen would ever be treated that way. Ask, and get the answer in writing.
Some low-quality third-party pages still quote 30 or 90 days for Academy returns. Academy's own page said 60 days when we checked, so follow that. Our guide totreadmill return policiescompares how other retailers and manufacturers handle large-item returns.
9. Does Academy Price Match Treadmills?
Yes, and it goes further than most: Academy's price-match guarantee, checked on 20 October 2026, says it will beat a qualifying competitor's advertised price by 5%, not just match it. Independent coverage, including ConsumerAffairs, describes the same beat-by-5% policy. For a treadmill to qualify:
- Identical product: the same brand and the same model number.
- In stock at Academy in store or online at the time of purchase.
- A current, verifiable price from a printed or digital ad, or a website. For an online match, Academy asks for the retailer's name and a direct link to the product.
- From a qualifying retailer: any local retailer's printed ad, or one of the named online retailers β Amazon and Walmart (excluding third-party sellers on either), Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Carter's Country, Champs Sporting Goods, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dunham's Sports, Eastbay, Fanatics, Hibbett Sports, Kansas Sampler, Rally House, REI, Scheels, Sportsman's Warehouse and Target.
The exclusions matter for treadmills: misprinted prices, clearance, closeouts, timed events, buy-one-get-one offers, rebates, coupons, membership-only prices and limited-quantity offers are all excluded, and Academy may limit a match to one per customer per day per item. It will also match its own website price in store and vice versa, and it offers a price adjustment on items bought within 14 days of the date on your receipt, excluding clearance and timed-event purchases.
Two practical notes. First, manufacturers' own websites, Best Buy, Costco and Home Depot are not on the online list, so a sale price on nordictrack.com, for example, does not qualify unless a local retailer prints it in an ad β and many brand sales are timed events in any case. Second, the identical-model rule is strict; compare the full item number before you ask. For when treadmill prices typically fall, see thebest time of year to buy a treadmilland our notes on judging Black Friday treadmill deals.
10. The Academy Credit Card and Paying Over Time
In March 2026 Academy replaced its old store card with two new cards issued by Comenity Capital Bank, part of Bread Financial: the myAcademy Rewards Mastercard, usable anywhere, and the myAcademy Rewards Credit Card, usable only at Academy. You are considered for the Mastercard first and, if not eligible, for the store-only card. Bread Financial's announcement and Academy's card page agree on the core terms, as checked on 20 October 2026:
- 5% off purchases at Academy made with either card, excluding gift cards, licences and in-store services.
- $30 off a first purchase over $30 made on the day you are approved. Academy's terms say this cannot be combined with the 5% discount, so on a treadmill bought as your first card purchase the saving may be $30 rather than 5% β on a $1,299.99 machine that is a $35 difference. Ask at checkout which applies.
- Free shipping with no minimum, but bulk and select items are excluded, so it may not cover a treadmill.
- No annual fee; a variable APR applies to any balance not paid in full. The card is not available to California residents.
The card is a discount tool, not a financing plan. We did not see a deferred-interest or 0%-for-a-period promotion on Academy's card page, so carrying a treadmill balance on it means paying interest at the card's variable rate. Academy's checkout also accepts Klarna, Sezzle, PayPal and Bread Pay installment loans, which Academy lists as eligible for fitness equipment, and the treadmill pages we checked showed "Pay in 4 interest-free payments" alongside a monthly "as low as" figure. Read the terms of whichever plan you choose β the rate, the term and what happens on a return β before signing. Our guide totreadmill financingcompares the main options.
The product pages also offered optional protection plans β two- and three-year plans priced between $64.99 and $179 on the machines we checked. Read who administers a plan and how it overlaps with the manufacturer's warranty before adding one.
11. How Do Academy's Prices Compare With Other Places to Buy?
There is no simple answer, which is the point. On 20 October 2026 we compared two NordicTrack treadmills that carried the same model numbers at Academy and on NordicTrack's own site:
| Model (item number) | academy.com | nordictrack.com |
|---|---|---|
| T Series 10 (NTL15425) | $1,299.99 | $1,599.99 on sale (was $1,799.99), free standard delivery |
| Commercial 1250 (NTL14125) | $1,999.99 | $1,599.99 on sale (was $1,999.99), free standard delivery |
So Academy was $300 cheaper on one machine and $400 dearer on the other, before Academy's bulk delivery charge, which is calculated at checkout. NordicTrack's site also advertised a 30-day home trial. Neither channel was consistently cheaper, and both prices will have moved by the time you read this. Our review of theNordicTrack Commercial 1250covers that machine in detail.
Against other sporting goods chains, Academy works much likeDick's Sporting Goodsor Scheels: a mainstream range, some floor models, freight delivery for big machines. Its distinguishing features are the beat-by-5% price match, which lists Dick's and Scheels among the qualifying competitors, and a regional footprint in the South and Southeast where those chains are thinner on the ground. Against Walmart andAmazon, it has a smaller range but no third-party marketplace sellers, and a store to walk into.
The sensible approach is the same everywhere: settle the specification, then compare the delivered price for the identical model number across channels, adding delivery level, assembly and return terms to the comparison. Our guide totreadmills for salesets out what each channel usually includes.
12. Who Handles the Warranty, and What About Recalls?
Warranty cover on a treadmill bought at Academy comes from the manufacturer, and the product pages we checked listed the manufacturer's terms in the specifications β frame, motor, parts and labour separately. Claims, parts and in-home service generally run through the brand, so register the machine with the manufacturer, keep the model and serial numbers with your Academy receipt, and check whether the brand has service technicians where you live. Read the labour term in particular: Academy's T Series 10 listing and NordicTrack's own page both gave ten years on the frame, two years on parts and one year on labour. Ourwarranty guideexplains how to read the terms.
We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall database on 20 October 2026 for every brand in the table above and found no treadmill recall for any of them. Three related recalls are worth knowing about: iFIT recalled NordicTrack rowing machines for a fire hazard in October 2025 and NordicTrack and ProForm 50 lb adjustable dumbbells in 2024, and Johnson Health Tech, which now owns Bowflex, recalled BowFlex adjustable dumbbells in June 2025. None of those is a treadmill. Academy also keeps a product recalls page on its site. Registering your treadmill with the manufacturer is how you would hear about any future recall.
13. How Do You Judge a Treadmill at Academy, and What Should You Check Before Paying?
Judge the machine on the same figures you would anywhere, not on the screen or the sale tag. Academy's specification lists include useful fields β continuous motor horsepower, running surface, maximum user weight and manufacturer warranty β but they are not always complete; the NordicTrack T Series 10 listing we read gave the running surface length (60 inches) without the width. Check gaps against the manufacturer's page.
- Motor: continuous-duty horsepower, not peak. See thehorsepower guide.
- Running surface: length and width against your stride and height. See thebelt size guide.
- Subscription: many NordicTrack, ProForm, Bowflex and Echelon features need a paid membership. Check what the machine does without one; our guide totreadmills without subscriptionssets out the cost over time.
Before you pay, run through this list:
- Tested, or researched properly: walked, run, inclined and folded in store, or read independent coverage of the exact model.
- Item number confirmed against what you tried or researched.
- Delivered price known: product price plus the bulk delivery charge for the level you want, compared with the delivered price elsewhere.
- Delivery level chosen: door, main entrance or room of choice.
- Assembly arranged: free for store pick-up on select models, or through the brand, a technician or yourself.
- Return logistics understood: unused and boxed for a change-of-mind return, and Customer Care for bulk items.
- Price match checked: identical model, qualifying retailer, not a timed event.
- Card terms read: whether you would get $30 off or 5%, and the APR if you carry a balance.
If the specification fits and the numbers work, Academy is a sound place to buy. If you are still deciding how much to spend, start with our guide tohow much to spend on a treadmill.
14. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Academy Sports sell treadmills?
Yes. On 20 October 2026 academy.com listed treadmills and walking pads from NordicTrack, ProForm, Bowflex, Echelon, Sunny Health & Fitness, XTERRA, UREVO, WalkingPad, CENTR, Assault Fitness, adidas, Reebok and others, at listed prices from $199.99 to $4,999.99 for motorized machines. Store stock varies, so check availability for your local store.
What is the Academy return policy on treadmills?
Academy accepts most unused, new-condition items within 60 days of purchase, refunded to the original payment method. Returns must be resalable with no visible wear, in original packaging, unless there is a defect, transit damage or a performance issue. For items that needed bulk shipping, Academy asks you to contact Customer Care.
Does Academy price match treadmills?
Yes. Academy says it beats a qualifying competitor's current advertised price by 5% on an identical, in-stock item with the same brand and model number. Qualifying online retailers include Amazon, Walmart, Dick's, Scheels and Target; clearance, timed events, coupons and membership prices are excluded. It also adjusts its own price within 14 days of purchase.
Does Academy deliver and assemble treadmills?
Large treadmills ship by Academy's bulk freight carrier, typically within 7 to 14 business days, with Basic (to the door), Scheduled (inside the main entrance) and Room of Choice levels where available. Academy offers free assembly of select treadmills picked up in store. It does not ship to California, Alaska or Hawaii.
Can you finance a treadmill at Academy?
Academy accepts Klarna, Sezzle, PayPal and Bread Pay installment loans, which it lists as eligible for fitness equipment. Its myAcademy Rewards credit cards give 5% off Academy purchases, or $30 off a first same-day purchase, with no annual fee but a variable APR on unpaid balances. The cards are not available in California.
Where are Academy Sports stores located?
Academy describes itself as running more than 300 stores in 21 states, concentrated in Texas, the Gulf states and the Southeast, and reaching north to Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Its store directory listed those 21 states on 20 October 2026. Outside them, academy.com ships to the contiguous states except California.
Common Mistakes When Buying a Treadmill at Academy
None of these is unique to Academy, but its written policies make each one easy to avoid.
Building it before you are sure
Academy's 60-day returns are for unused items in original packaging, unless something is faulty. Test in store first, and keep the box until you know you are keeping the machine.
Assuming the treadmill ships free
Academy's free shipping offers exclude bulk and heavy items. Check the delivery charge for the level you want at checkout and compare the delivered price with other retailers.
Asking for a match on the wrong model
The price match needs the same brand and model number from a qualifying retailer. Compare item numbers first, and remember that manufacturers' own sites are not on Academy's online list.
Choosing door delivery without a plan
Basic delivery stops at the door. Unless you choose a higher level, arrange help to carry a heavy box inside and up any stairs before the truck arrives.
