3. Why Your Weight Changes the Answer
Motor load is a function of how much mass has to be kept moving against the friction of the deck. A heavier user increases the normal force between belt and deck, which increases friction, which increases the current the motor draws to hold the set speed. The relationship is close enough to linear that a simple adjustment works: add about 0.25 CHP for every 50 lb above 200 lb.

The physical constraint is heat. A DC motor converts some fraction of its input to waste heat, and that heat has to leave through the housing and whatever airflow the machine provides. Look for the word continuous. If a listing says 3.0 CHP, take it at face value. If it says 3.0 HP, 3.0 peak, or 3.0 treadmill duty, assume the sustainable figure is somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 and decide whether that is enough for you. Manufacturers who have a good continuous number say so.
Check the warranty on the motor separately. This is the most reliable signal available, because it is the one claim that costs the manufacturer money if it is wrong.
