1. Why Tightening Is the Wrong First Move
Two entirely different problems produce the same sensation underfoot. A genuinely loose belt slips because there is not enough grip against the front roller to pull it along. A belt on a dry deck slips because the friction between the belt and the deck board has risen high enough that the roller cannot overcome it. From the top of the machine, those feel identical.
The treatments, however, are opposite in effect. Lubricating a dry deck removes the resistance and the slipping stops. Tightening the belt on a dry deck forces the roller to win against the friction by gripping harder, which does stop the slipping — and leaves the motor permanently working against both the original friction and the extra tension you have just added. The symptom disappears and the damage accelerates.

3. Tension and Tracking Are Different
Both adjustments use the same two bolts at the rear corners of the machine, which is why they get confused constantly. The distinction is worth holding clearly in your head before you pick up the hex key.
Tension is how tight the belt is around the two rollers. You change it by turning both rear bolts the same amount in the same direction. Clockwise tightens, anticlockwise slackens. Tension fixes slipping.
Tracking is whether the belt runs down the centre of the deck. You change it by turning one bolt relative to the other, which effectively makes one side of the rear roller sit fractionally further back and steers the belt away from it. Tracking fixes drifting.
Adjusting one inevitably disturbs the other slightly, so the correct order is tension first, tracking second. Set the tension until the slipping stops, then centre the belt, then re-check the tension. Doing it the other way round means re-doing the tracking after every tension change.
4. Setting Tension Correctly
Confirm the deck is lubricated first. Then, with the machine unplugged, locate the two bolts at the rear corners — usually recessed in the end caps and taking the hex key that came with the machine.
Turn each one a quarter turn clockwise, both sides by the same amount. Plug in, run at 3 mph, and test by planting your weight firmly onto one foot. If it still hesitates, unplug and repeat another quarter turn each side. Small increments are the whole technique: a full turn is a large change and over-tightening is easy.
Stop the moment the slipping stops, and then verify you have not gone too far. With the machine off, grip the belt at the centre of the deck and lift. You should be able to raise it two to three inches. If you cannot lift it that far, you are over-tight — back both bolts off equally until you can.
Over-tightening is not a cosmetic error. It loads the roller bearings, which is how machines develop a rumble or a squeal at the front roller; it stretches the belt permanently, so it will need replacing sooner; and it adds drag the motor has to overcome continuously, which is the same thermal problem a dry deck causes. 5. Centring a Drifting Belt
A belt that runs off-centre will grind its own edge against the frame and destroy itself within weeks, so this is worth fixing the day you notice it rather than living with.
Run the belt empty at around 3 mph — never stand on it while adjusting — and watch which way it drifts. If it moves toward the right, turn the right rear bolt a quarter turn clockwise. If it moves left, turn the left bolt. Then stop and wait thirty seconds.
That wait is the part people skip and the reason tracking adjustments so often go wrong. The belt takes time to migrate to its new position, and making three quick turns because nothing appeared to happen puts you well past centre in the other direction. One quarter turn, thirty seconds, observe, repeat.
The belt should sit with roughly equal margin on each side of the deck. Perfect centring is not required and not achievable — a small steady offset that does not touch the frame is fine. What you are eliminating is contact and continuing movement, not asymmetry.

6. When the Floor Is the Problem
A treadmill frame is long and comparatively flexible. Sit one on a floor that is not flat and the frame twists slightly, which permanently steers the belt toward one side. No roller adjustment corrects that, because you are fighting the geometry of the frame rather than the setting of the bolts.
Check it directly: put a spirit level across the frame at the front and again at the rear, and along one side rail. Most machines have adjustable feet at the rear — wind them until the frame sits flat and does not rock when you push a corner. Two related causes are worth ruling out at the same time. 7. The Other Belt: Drive Belt Slip
There are two belts on a treadmill. The running belt is the one you stand on. The drive belt is a smaller belt inside the motor hood that connects the motor to the front roller, and when it slips the symptom is distinctive: the machine struggles specifically at start-up or when speed changes, rather than under steady load, and there is often a brief squeal from the front of the machine.

8. When the Belt Needs Replacing
A running belt is a consumable, not a permanent part. On a well-lubricated deck it will last many years; on a deck that has been dry it can be finished in months. Replacing one is normal maintenance rather than evidence the machine has failed.
The signs are physical and easy to check with the machine unplugged. Fraying or hardened edges mean it has been rubbing the frame. A underside that feels rough, or looks polished and glazed, means it has been running dry. Visible cracking across the surface, or a belt that has stretched so far it needs re-tensioning every few weeks, are both end of life.
Replacement belts are widely available for mainstream models and cost a fraction of a new machine. Fitting one is within reach of a competent owner on many machines — it involves removing the rear roller and the side rails — but it is genuinely more involved than the adjustments on this page, and the deck should be inspected at the same time. A new belt on a grooved or worn deck will not last.

9. When to Stop and Call Someone
Everything above is a mechanical adjustment made with a hex key on the outside of the machine, and it is entirely reasonable to do it yourself. Some symptoms are not in that category.
Stop using the machine and get help if you smell burning or hot plastic, if the breaker trips when it starts, if the belt continues moving after the safety key is pulled, or if the machine surges unexpectedly. The first two are electrical faults, the third is a safety-system failure, and the fourth is a controller problem. None of them is something to adjust around.
