How Do You Turn On a Treadmill?
Most treadmills turn on the same way: wall outlet, a power switch down at the front of the base, the safety key in place, a moment for the console to wake, then start. The steps are simple, but missing any one of them makes a working machine look dead. Here they are in order, with notes for NordicTrack, ProForm, Peloton and walking pads.

Your manual is the authority. Treadmills differ in where the switch is, how the console starts and what the start controls are called, and the details change between models and console generations. This page describes the general sequence and the arrangements common to many home machines; where your manual says something different, follow the manual. Plug the treadmill directly into a properly grounded wall outlet that meets the requirements in the manual. If you ever need to look inside the machine β at the cord connection, the switch or the motor compartment β switch off and unplug it at the wall first, and leave the controller and its wiring to a technician.
In This Guide
Turning on a treadmill should take ten seconds, and usually does. The reason people search for it is that the first attempt did nothing: the screen stayed dark, or it lit up and the belt would not move. Almost always, one step in a short sequence was missed β the switch at the base was off, the safety key was not seated, the console was still booting, or the machine was plugged into a power strip that cannot cope. This page sets out that sequence in order, explains the parts people cannot find, adds the brand notes that can be stated with confidence, and points to the right fault guide if the machine still will not wake.
1. How Do You Turn On a Treadmill? The Short Answer
Plug the treadmill directly into a wall outlet, switch on the main power switch (usually on the front of the base near where the cord enters the frame), make sure the safety key is in place on the console, wait for the console to start up, then press the start or quick-start control. The belt begins at a slow speed and you adjust from there.
- Plug in at the wall. Not through a power strip or extension cord unless your manual specifically allows it.
- Turn on the power switch. It is usually a rocker switch at the front of the motor end, close to the power cord, rather than on the console.
- Fit the safety key. Without it, many treadmills will not power the console fully, or will not let the belt start.
- Let the console start. A simple LED display lights at once; a touchscreen can take a minute or more, longer if it is updating.
- Press start. On touchscreen machines you may need to choose a manual workout or a user profile first.
If the console stays dark after all five steps, the cause is usually one of a short list β the key, a tripped reset switch on the machine, the outlet or breaker, the cord β and our guide to atreadmill that will not turn onworks through them in order. If the console lights but the belt will not move, that is a different problem with a different set of causes, covered further down.
2. Where Should a Treadmill Be Plugged In?
Directly into a grounded wall outlet, on a circuit that meets the requirements in your manual. This is the first step and the one most often done wrong, because the natural thing to do with a new appliance is plug it into the nearest power strip.
A motorised treadmill is one of the larger electrical loads in a home. The motor draws a surge of current when the belt starts and whenever load increases β a footstrike, an incline change β and that current has to come through every connection between the panel and the motor. A power strip, a multi-way adapter or a long, thin extension cord adds resistance and heat. At best the machine behaves erratically; at worst the strip overheats or trips. Many manufacturers' manuals say plainly not to use an extension cord, and some specify a dedicated circuit. Check what yours says, and whether it recommends or prohibits a surge protector, which manuals differ on.
Checks worth doing at the outlet
- Is the outlet live? Plug in a lamp. Outlets controlled by a wall switch catch people out, especially in basements and spare rooms.
- Is it a GFCI outlet that has tripped? Bathrooms, garages, basements and outdoor outlets often have GFCI protection, sometimes on a different outlet upstream. Press the reset button.
- Is the plug fully seated? Treadmill cords are heavy and can work loose, particularly if the cord runs under tension.
- Is the cord routed safely? Not under the deck, not across a walkway, and not pinched by the folding mechanism.
If the treadmill trips the breaker when it starts, rather than simply staying off, the fault-finding is different: it points to the circuit or to a machine drawing too much current, and it has its own guide in our fault diagnosis section. Never fit a larger breaker or fuse to stop the trips; the breaker protects the wiring in the wall.
3. Where Is the Power Switch on a Treadmill?
On most motorised home treadmills the main power switch is at the front of the base, on the motor end, close to where the power cord enters the frame. It is typically a rocker switch marked with the usual on and off symbols, and it sits low down, which is why so many owners do not know it exists. It is often not on the console at all.
Look at the front of the machine at floor level, on the side where the cord comes out. If there is a plastic motor hood, the switch is usually set into it or into the frame just below it. On some machines it is on the side of the base rather than the front. If you cannot see it, the parts diagram near the front of your manual will show it.
The reset button or circuit breaker next to it
Many treadmills also have a small reset button or built-in circuit breaker beside the power switch. It is a protective device for the machine: if the motor draws too much current, it trips and cuts power, and the treadmill stays off until it is pressed back in. Not every model has one, and on models that do it can look like a small black or white button that is easy to mistake for part of the switch. If your machine has one and it has popped out, press it in firmly, then try the power switch again.
If it trips again soon after, do not keep resetting it. Repeated trips mean something is drawing too much current β a dry deck, a tight belt, a motor or controller fault β and the fault guides linked below are the next step.
Walking pads and machines with no visible switch
Walking pads and some compact treadmills vary much more. Some have a switch on the side or rear of the base; some power on as soon as they are plugged in and wait in standby for a remote control or an app; some have a single button that does both. With these machines in particular, the quick-start guide that came in the box is the fastest answer, and it is worth keeping somewhere you can find it, because the remote and app arrangements differ more between walking-pad brands than switch positions do between full treadmills.
4. Does the Safety Key Have to Be In Before It Will Turn On?
On many treadmills, yes. The safety key β a magnetic or plug-in key on a cord with a clip at the other end β sits in a slot on the console, and when it is removed the machine stops the belt. Depending on the design, a treadmill without its key may show nothing at all, may light the console but refuse to start, or may display a message asking for the key. All three are normal behaviour, not faults.
The key works as an emergency stop. You clip the cord to your clothing at the waist; if you fall or drift too far back, the key pulls out and the belt stops. That is why the treadmill cares so much about it, and why a missing or badly seated key is one of the commonest reasons a perfectly good treadmill "will not turn on".
Getting the key right
- Seat it fully. Push it in until it sits flush. Some keys only fit one way round; try turning it over.
- Use the right key. Keys are not universal. A key from another machine, or a generic magnetic key, may not trigger the switch.
- Clip it to yourself, not the handrail. A key clipped to the frame cannot do its job.
- Remove it after use if there are children or pets in the house, and keep it out of reach.
If the key is in place and the machine still behaves as if it is missing, or if the key has been lost, our guide to atreadmill safety key that is not workingcovers cleaning the slot, worn keys, the switch behind it and ordering the right replacement. Do not bypass the switch with tape or a loose magnet.
5. How Long Does a Treadmill Console Take to Turn On?
A simple LED or LCD console usually lights within a second or two of the power switch going on. A touchscreen console can take considerably longer β commonly somewhere from a few seconds to a minute or more β because it is a small computer that has to boot an operating system, connect to Wi-Fi and, on connected machines, check in with the fitness platform.
During that time the screen may show a logo, a progress indicator or nothing much at all, and pressing buttons does little. Give it time before deciding something is wrong. A touchscreen that seems frozen on a logo for a long time may be installing a software update, which can take a good while on a slow connection.
Do not switch off during an update
If the console indicates an update is in progress, leave it alone until it finishes. Cutting power partway through a firmware or software update is one of the few ways an owner can create a genuine software fault on a treadmill console. If an update seems stuck for a very long time, check the manufacturer's support guidance for your model before power-cycling.
Profiles, sign-ins and manual mode
Connected treadmills often start on a home or profile screen rather than a ready-to-run screen. You may need to choose a user, sign in, or select a manual or "just run" style workout before the start control appears. The exact wording varies by brand and by console software version, and it changes with updates, so if the start control is not where you expect, look for a manual workout option on the home screen. Most connected machines can be used in a manual mode without a class playing; whether that requires an active subscription varies by brand and has changed over time, so check the current terms for your machine.
If the console powers up but freezes, reboots itself or goes blank partway through, that is a console problem rather than a power problem: a loose console cable, a software fault or a failing console board, rather than anything to do with the switch or the outlet.
6. How Do You Start the Belt Safely Once It Is On?
Stand on the side rails, not on the belt, clip the safety key to your clothing, then press start. Most treadmills give a short countdown and then move the belt at a slow walking speed. Step on once the belt is moving steadily, holding the handrails for balance as you do, then let go and adjust the speed.
The control to begin is usually labelled start, quick start, go or something similar, often in green. On many machines quick start skips the programme menus and begins a manual session straight away. On a walking pad it may be a button on a remote control or in an app. If the control is a touchscreen icon rather than a physical button, it may only appear once the console has finished starting and you have chosen a workout.
A few habits worth starting with
- Start slowly. Let the belt reach a walking pace and walk for a few minutes before raising the speed.
- Check the incline is at zero before starting, especially if someone else used the machine last.
- Keep the area behind the treadmill clear. Manuals typically specify clearance behind the deck, because that is where a fall ends up.
- Know where stop is. Find the stop or pause control before you need it, and remember that pulling the safety key also stops the belt.
If the console is lit and accepts the start command but the belt does not move, or moves and stops, that is not a turning-on problem. The causes β the key switch, the drive belt, the motor, the controller, a speed sensor β are covered in our guide to atreadmill that turns on but the belt will not move.
7. How Do You Turn On a NordicTrack, ProForm or Peloton Treadmill?
The same general sequence applies, and the honest answer for any brand is that the manual for your model number is the authority. Brand ranges change, console generations change, and the button and menu names that applied to one model often do not apply to the next. What follows are only the points that are widely consistent.
NordicTrack and ProForm
On many NordicTrack and ProForm treadmills, the power switch is at the front of the base near where the power cord enters the frame, not on the console, and the safety key must be in its slot on the console before the treadmill will run. Many models also have a reset or circuit breaker button near the power switch. Touchscreen models in these ranges are connected consoles that need time to boot, and may start on a profile or home screen; look for a manual workout option if you want to start without a class.
Beyond that, layouts vary by model and year, so find the model number (usually on a label on the frame) and use the manual for that exact model. Our guide onhow to reset a NordicTrack treadmillcovers the reset switch, power cycling and the console reset in detail, and ourProForm treadmill troubleshootingguide does the same for ProForm, including consoles that look dead because they are asleep.
Peloton
Peloton treadmills follow the same broad pattern: a wall outlet, a power switch on the machine, a safety key, and a touchscreen that has to boot before you can start. Where exactly the switch sits and how the start controls work differs between Peloton models, so use Peloton's own setup guidance and manual for your model rather than general instructions. Peloton treadmills have been the subject of safety recalls in the past; if you own one, it is worth checking the manufacturer's current safety information for your model and following any instructions it gives.
Other brands and walking pads
Other treadmill brands, and the many walking-pad brands, generally follow one of the two patterns on this page: a base switch, a safety key and a console start control, or a plug-in-and-standby design with a remote or app. If in doubt, the quick-start sheet in the box is usually more useful than a search result.
8. Is It Off, Asleep or in Standby? And How Do You Turn It Off?
Many treadmill consoles go to sleep after a period without use, and a sleeping console can look exactly like a machine that is switched off. Touching the screen, pressing a button or reinserting the safety key usually wakes it. If the power switch at the base is on and the console is dark, try waking it before assuming a fault.
Some machines also have a standby or low-power mode that keeps the console partly alive so it can wake quickly and download updates. In that state the machine is still drawing a small amount of power and is still live, which matters if you are about to clean it or move it. The standby draw is small, but the machine is not disconnected.
Turning a treadmill off properly
- Stop the belt with the stop control and let it come to a halt. Do not step off a moving belt.
- End or save the workout on a connected console if you want the session recorded.
- Remove the safety key and keep it somewhere children cannot reach it.
- Turn off the power switch at the base. Many owners leave connected machines on so they can update overnight; that is a choice, but switching off at the base is the simple way to make sure the machine cannot be started.
Unplug at the wall before any cleaning, lubrication or adjustment, before moving the treadmill, during a long absence, and during electrical storms if your manual recommends it. Switching off at the base is not the same as being disconnected from the supply.
9. What If the Treadmill Still Will Not Turn On?
Work through the free checks in order before assuming anything has failed. A dead treadmill is far more often a key, a switch or an outlet than a broken part.
- Safety key fully seated, the right way round, the right key for the machine.
- Power switch at the base on.
- Reset button or circuit breaker on the machine pressed in, if it has one.
- Outlet live, GFCI not tripped, house breaker not tripped, and no power strip or extension cord in the way.
- Cord undamaged and fully pushed in at both ends, where it plugs into the machine as well as the wall.
- Console asleep or updating rather than off: touch the screen and give it a couple of minutes.
If those six checks do not bring it to life, the problem is likely to be inside the machine β an internal fuse, the console cable, the controller board β and our full guide to atreadmill that will not turn ontakes it from there, including when the repair is worth paying for. Brand-specific guides help with NordicTrack and ProForm consoles in particular, because their reset routines and console behaviour have their own quirks.
Two rules apply throughout. Unplug at the wall before taking any cover off, and do not touch the motor control board; capacitors on it can hold a charge after the machine has been unplugged. And if the machine is under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening anything beyond what the manual describes.
10. Anything Different the First Time, or After a Move?
Yes, a few checks. A treadmill that has just been assembled, moved or stored is the one most likely not to start, and usually for a reason that takes a minute to fix.
After assembly, the most common culprit is the console cable. It runs up through an upright to a connector at the console, and if it is not fully pushed together, or was pinched when the upright was bolted on, the console stays dark. Our guide onhow to assemble a treadmillcovers routing it so this does not happen.
After a move, check the same cable, check that nothing was knocked loose at the base switch or cord inlet, and make sure the deck is fully unfolded and locked; some machines will not run with the deck partly raised. If the console or uprights were removed for the move, reconnect exactly as they came apart.
After cold storage, such as a garage or a van in winter, let the treadmill come up to room temperature before switching it on. Moving a cold machine into a warm room can cause condensation inside the console and controller, and power should not go into damp electronics. A few hours indoors is a sensible margin, and longer if the machine was very cold.
Before the first session, check the belt is centred and tensioned and the deck is lubricated if the manual calls for it at set-up. Then start at a slow walk for a few minutes and listen. New machines can make some noise while they settle in, but grinding, scraping or a smell of hot electrics means stop and investigate.
11. Frequently Asked Questions
How do you turn on a NordicTrack treadmill?
On many NordicTrack treadmills, plug the machine directly into a wall outlet, switch on the power switch at the front of the base near the power cord, put the safety key in its slot on the console, and wait for the console to boot. Then choose a workout or manual mode and press start. Check the manual for your model number.
Where is the on switch on a treadmill?
On most motorised home treadmills the main power switch is at the front of the base, near where the power cord enters the frame, often low down on or beneath the motor hood. It is usually not on the console. Some walking pads use a side switch, a remote or an app instead. The parts diagram in the manual shows its location.
Why will my treadmill not turn on even though it is plugged in?
The most common reasons are a missing or badly seated safety key, the power switch at the base being off, a tripped reset button on the machine, a dead or tripped outlet, or a power strip that cannot carry the load. A sleeping or updating console can also look dead. Work through those before suspecting an internal fault.
Can a treadmill turn on without the safety key?
It depends on the design. Some treadmills show nothing without the key, some light the console but refuse to start the belt, and some display a message asking for it. In all cases the belt should not run without the key in place. If the key is fitted and the machine acts as if it is missing, the key or switch may need attention.
How long does a treadmill touchscreen take to turn on?
Simple LED consoles light almost immediately. Touchscreen consoles boot like a small computer and commonly take from several seconds to a minute or more, longer when installing a software update. Leave the machine alone during an update, because cutting power partway through can cause a genuine software fault on the console.
Should you turn off a treadmill after every use?
Stopping the belt and removing the safety key after every session is sensible, especially with children in the house. Switching off at the base switch is a good habit, though some owners leave connected machines on so they update overnight. Unplug at the wall before cleaning, adjusting or moving it, and during long absences.
Common Mistakes When Turning On a Treadmill
Most treadmills that seem not to turn on are working machines with one step missed. These are the ones that catch people out.
Plugging it into a power strip or extension cord
A treadmill motor draws a large current at start-up, and strips and thin cords add resistance and heat. The machine may stay dark, behave erratically or trip something. Plug it directly into a grounded wall outlet that meets the manual's circuit requirements, and check whether the manual allows a surge protector.
Looking for the power switch on the console
On most home treadmills the main switch is at floor level on the front of the base, near the power cord. Owners press every console button and conclude the machine is broken. Check the base first, and look for a reset button beside the switch that may have tripped.
Cutting the power during a console update
A touchscreen that seems frozen on a logo may be updating. Switching it off partway through is one of the few ways to create a real software fault. Give it time, and check the manufacturer's support guidance before power-cycling a console that appears stuck on an update.
Clipping the safety key to the frame
People clip the key to the handrail so it stops getting in the way. The machine turns on and runs, but the emergency stop can no longer work, because a fall will not pull the key out. Clip it to your clothing at the waist every session.
