Treadmill Incline: Percentage vs Degrees
They are two different measurements of the same slope, and the numbers do not match. Fifteen per cent — the ceiling on most home treadmills — is only 8.5 degrees. Here is the conversion, and what each grade actually asks of you.

The conversion in one line. Degrees equal the inverse tangent of the percentage divided by 100. So 10 per cent is 5.7 degrees, 12 per cent is 6.8, and 15 per cent is 8.5. Below about 20 per cent, dividing the percentage by 1.75 gets you close enough for practical purposes.

Almost everyone assumes that a 15 per cent incline is roughly 15 degrees, and it is 8.5. The gap matters in both directions: people who convert in their heads underestimate how steep a machine's percentage grades are, and people comparing an incline trainer's 40 per cent against a hiking trail's angle overestimate what they are about to attempt.
1. What Each Measures
The two figures describe the same slope from different starting points, and neither is more correct — they answer different questions.
Percentage grade is the vertical rise divided by the horizontal distance travelled, expressed as a percentage. Climb 10 feet over 100 feet of horizontal distance and you have a 10 per cent grade. It is a ratio, and it is how road signs, cycling routes and trail descriptions have always been written.
Degrees measure the angle between the slope and the horizontal. It is what you would get by putting a protractor against the deck, and it is the intuitive measure for anyone thinking geometrically rather than in terms of climbing.
The reason they diverge is that percentage is unbounded while degrees are not. A 45-degree slope is exactly 100 per cent grade — rising as much as it advances. A vertical wall is 90 degrees and an infinite percentage. That is why percentage figures grow so much faster than degree figures as slopes steepen, and why the two look mismatched at every point on the chart.
At the shallow grades treadmills use, the relationship is close to linear — roughly 1.75 per cent per degree — which is where the useful shortcut in section three comes from.
2. The Conversion Chart
Percentage grades as treadmills display them, with the equivalent angle and a note on what each one demands.

For a sense of scale: highway grades in the United States rarely exceed 6 per cent, and a road signed as steep is usually 8 to 10. The 15 per cent maximum on a mid-range home treadmill is therefore steeper than almost any road most people have driven, which is worth remembering before setting it for a thirty-minute session.
3. The Maths and a Shortcut
The exact conversion uses the inverse tangent, because percentage grade is the tangent of the angle multiplied by 100.
To go from percentage to degrees: divide the grade by 100, then take the inverse tangent. Ten per cent becomes arctan of 0.10, which is 5.71 degrees. To go the other way: take the tangent of the angle and multiply by 100. Five degrees becomes tan 5 multiplied by 100, which is 8.75 per cent.
The shortcut worth memorising is that in the range treadmills use,one degree is a bit under two per cent — 1.75 is close enough. Divide a percentage by 1.75 for the angle, multiply an angle by 1.75 for the percentage. At 10 per cent that gives 5.7 against a true 5.71. At 15 per cent it gives 8.6 against a true 8.53.
The shortcut degrades as slopes steepen, because the relationship is a tangent rather than a straight line. At 40 per cent it would predict 22.9 degrees against a true 21.8 — still usable, but visibly drifting. Above about 25 per cent, use the real calculation.
One conversion that comes up constantly and is not what people expect: a 100 per cent grade is 45 degrees, not vertical. If a machine ever claimed 100 per cent incline it would be tilting the deck to the diagonal — which is a useful check on any incline figure that sounds implausible.
4. Why Treadmills Use Percent
Two reasons, and both are better than convention.
The first is that percentage grade transfers directly to the outside world. Road gradients, cycling climbs, trail signage and topographic maps all use percentage. A runner training for a hilly race can look up the course profile, find that the worst section is 8 per cent, and set 8 on the console. That is a genuinely useful correspondence and it would be lost if machines displayed degrees.
The second is that exercise physiology uses fractional grade in its equations. The standard formulas for the oxygen cost of walking and running — the ones underlying every calorie estimate a console produces — take grade as a decimal fraction, not an angle. Consoles work in percentage because their arithmetic works in percentage.
The practical consequence is that if you want to compare your treadmill work against outdoor terrain, percentage is already the right unit and no conversion is needed. 5. The 1 Per Cent Rule
The most repeated piece of treadmill advice, and worth stating accurately rather than as folklore.
The idea comes from research into the energy cost of treadmill running compared with running outdoors. Outdoors, a runner has to push through still air, and that resistance grows with speed. On a treadmill the air is moving with you, so that cost disappears. The finding commonly cited is that setting a 1 per cent grade brings the metabolic demand of treadmill running close to the equivalent outdoor pace.
Two qualifications matter. The effect scales with speed, because air resistance does — at a brisk run the correction is meaningful, and at a slow jog it is small. And it was studied for running rather than walking; at walking speeds air resistance is a very small part of the effort, so the correction is close to irrelevant.
Practically: if you are a runner using the treadmill to hit specific paces for outdoor training, 1 per cent is a sensible default. If you are walking, or running easily for general fitness, running at 0 per cent is not cheating and 1 per cent is not required. The number that matters more is whether you are training consistently.

6. Which Grade to Train At
Converting the numbers is easy. Choosing one is the part that changes your training.
0 to 2 per cent is flat running, with or without the air resistance correction. This is where speed work belongs, because incline changes your mechanics and makes pace-based training harder to interpret.
3 to 6 per cent is the productive walking range. Effort rises substantially while your gait stays close to normal, and it is sustainable for long enough to be worth doing. For most people looking to raise the intensity of a walk without running, this band does the work.
10 to 12 per cent is demanding walking and serious running. A general principle: increase grade or increase speed, not both at once. The combination escalates effort much faster than people expect, and the deck being tilted changes where load lands in the calf and Achilles.
7. The Handrail Problem
The single most common way incline training is quietly wasted, and it gets worse exactly as the grade gets steeper.
Leaning on the handrails offloads part of your body weight through your arms into the frame. Since the work of climbing is lifting your mass against gravity, removing some of that mass from your legs removes a proportional amount of the effort — while the console, which knows only speed and grade, carries on reporting the calories you would have burned had you not been leaning.
The effect is large. Studies of handrail use on inclined treadmills have found reductions in energy cost of a quarter or more at steeper grades, and gripping tightly at 12 per cent can bring the actual demand back down near a flat walk. That is the difference between a hard session and a comfortable one, and it is invisible from the console.
The rule that follows is simple: if you cannot hold the grade with your hands off the rails, the grade is too steep for you today. Light fingertip contact for balance is fine. Bearing weight through straight arms is not, and it also pushes your torso forward into a posture that loads the lower back.

8. What Machines Actually Reach
Incline range is a real differentiator between price tiers, and it is worth knowing where the lines fall before assuming a machine will do what you want.
No incline, or manual only. Most walking pads and budget folding machines. Some have a two- or three-position manual pin offering a fixed 2 or 4 per cent, which cannot be changed mid-session and is not comparable to powered incline.
10 per cent. Common on entry-level powered machines. Adequate for general fitness walking, short of what a runner training for hills wants.
12 to 15 per cent. The mainstream home standard, and where most machines between about 1,000 and 2,500 dollars land. Fifteen per cent covers essentially all road-race terrain and the 12-3-30 protocol with margin.
Decline, typically to minus 3 per cent. Less common and genuinely useful for anyone training for downhill running, which loads the quadriceps eccentrically in a way no flat session replicates.
20 to 40 per cent. Incline trainers, a distinct category with different geometry, a shorter footprint and a much greater height at full grade. Leaning on the handrails at grade
Bearing weight through your arms offloads your legs and can cut the real energy cost by a quarter or more at steep grades, while the console keeps reporting the full figure. At 40 per cent grade the running surface rises a long way, and you rise with it. A basement that comfortably fits a flat treadmill can be genuinely unsafe with an incline trainer at full grade. Measure the height directly above where you will be standing, not the middle of the room.
