Where a manufacturer specifies something different, follow the manufacturer. Deck materials, belt backings and factory treatments vary enough that a specific instruction beats a general rule, and on a machine still under warranty the manual's schedule is also the one you will be asked about if you make a claim.
3. The Finger Test
Thirty seconds, no tools, and more reliable than any schedule because it measures the actual state of the deck rather than predicting it.
Unplug the machine at the wall. Reach under the belt at the middle of the deck — the belt lifts easily by hand once the machine is off — and run a fingertip across the deck surface, not the belt underside.
A properly lubricated deck feels slightly slick, in the way a waxed surface does. Your finger should slide with very little resistance and come away with a faint, barely visible film of silicone. That is a deck with two months of life left in it.
A deck needing lubricant feels dry and grippy, like bare board, and your finger comes away clean. Some decks also feel faintly dusty, which is silicone that has broken down and mixed with debris. Both mean lubricate now.

4. Symptoms of a Dry Deck
If you have not been checking, the machine will tell you — but by the time it does, some damage has usually been done.
The classic symptom is hesitation under footstrike. You plant your weight, the belt momentarily slows or catches, and it recovers a fraction of a second later. This feels exactly like a loose belt, and it is the single most misdiagnosed treadmill symptom there is. 5. What Shortens the Interval
Four conditions consume lubricant faster than the baseline, and they compound.
User weight. The dominant variable. More load means more pressure between belt and deck, which squeezes the silicone film out of the contact area faster. A user over 220 lb should shorten the interval by roughly a third; over 260 lb, by half.
Running rather than walking. Higher belt speed means more deck passing under the same load per session, and footstrike at pace generates local pressure spikes a walker never produces.
Heat and dry air. Silicone thins and migrates more readily in a warm room, and a machine in a hot garage or a south-facing conservatory depletes faster than the same machine in a cool basement. Cold has the opposite problem: stiff lubricant adds start-up drag until the deck warms.
Dust and fibre. A dirty environment contaminates the film, and contaminated silicone stops behaving like a lubricant. 6. Over-Lubricating Is Real
Rarer than under-lubricating, and worth naming because the instinct after reading a page like this one is to apply more, more often.
The normal dose is one to two ounces spread along the deck under the belt, concentrated in the centre third where the running happens. That is genuinely a small amount — roughly a tablespoon or two — and applying a whole bottle at once is a common first-time error.
Excess silicone does not stay where you put it. It migrates to the belt edges, collects dust and belt debris into a grey paste, and works its way onto the top surface of the belt, where it is a slip hazard underfoot. 7. Maintenance-Free Decks
A growing number of machines are sold with pre-lubricated, wax-impregnated or so-called maintenance-free decks. The claim is real but usually narrower than it sounds.
What these decks genuinely have is a factory application that is more durable than anything applied by hand — silicone impregnated into the deck surface, or a wax-loaded belt underside that releases lubricant gradually. On light domestic use these can go a year or more without attention, which is a real advantage.
What they are not is permanent. The reservoir depletes like any other, just more slowly, and manufacturers who describe a deck as maintenance-free are usually describing the first few years rather than the machine's life. The practical approach is to do the finger test at twelve months and annually thereafter. If the deck is still slick, do nothing and check again next year. 8. What Skipping It Costs
Worth stating plainly, because the case for a ten-minute job is easier to make with the alternative in view.
Friction on a dry deck rises steadily and the motor compensates by drawing more current. That extra current becomes heat, and the heat accumulates in the motor and in the controller board mounted beside it. Controller boards fail from cumulative thermal stress, and a replacement board on a mid-range machine frequently costs several hundred dollars fitted — a substantial fraction of the machine's value.
Before that, the belt goes. A belt on a lubricated deck lasts many years; one running on a dry deck can be finished in under two, and the deck surface usually glazes at the same time, so you are replacing both.
