1. The Three Questions
Answer these before touching anything. Together they eliminate most of the candidate list.
Does the noise track belt speed? Run the machine empty and change the speed. A noise that gets faster as the belt gets faster is rotational — a roller, a bearing, the drive belt, or the belt seam. A noise that stays the same, or only appears at particular speeds, is usually structural or a resonance.

Where is it, front or rear? This is harder than it sounds, because steel carries sound extremely well. Have someone else walk on the machine while you crouch at each end in turn, or use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope — handle to your ear, tip against the frame near each roller housing, with the belt running empty. Keep clear of moving parts.
One more piece of information: how long it has been happening, and whether it is getting worse. A stable noise that has been there for months is usually cosmetic. A noise that has developed over a few weeks and is worsening is a component degrading, and that changes the urgency.

Note the difference between the fourth row and the last. A dull rubbing sound is friction and is fixed with a bottle of silicone. A grinding or rumbling that has been getting worse week by week is a bearing, and it is the one noise on this page that warrants stopping rather than investigating.
3. Loose Bolts Come First
The most common cause of a treadmill squeak, the cheapest to fix, and the one people skip because it seems too simple.
A treadmill is a bolted steel structure that gets shaken thousands of times per session. Fasteners work loose, and once a joint has a fraction of a millimetre of play in it, two pieces of metal rub every time your foot lands. 4. Roller Bearings
The second most common source, and the one worth taking seriously because it usually has a preventable cause.
Front and rear rollers run on sealed bearings. When one starts to fail it produces a squeal or rumble that rises and falls with belt speed and is loudest at the end of the machine where the bad bearing sits. It is present with the belt running empty, which distinguishes it from the structural noises above.
The most common cause is belt over-tension. Tension is a compressive load carried directly by the roller bearings, and a belt tightened well past correct shortens their life considerably. A rhythmic tick or squeak once per rotation is the belt itself. Every running belt has a seam, and a seam that has begun to lift or has hardened makes a noise each time it passes over a roller. Unplug and inspect the belt all the way round, looking for a raised seam, a worn patch, or a nick in the surface. A lifting seam is a belt approaching the end of its life.
A dull rubbing or shuffling that rises with speed is usually a dry deck. Friction produces a broad, soft noise quite unlike a squeak, and it comes with the other dry-deck symptoms — a belt that hesitates under your weight, a hotter motor hood. Look at the gap on each side of the belt while it runs empty; if it is much wider on one side, the belt has drifted off centre and is grinding its own edge away. 6. Incline Motor Noises
A separate system with its own noises, and the one people misattribute most often.
The incline mechanism is a small motor driving a lead screw or an actuator that lifts the front of the frame. It is loud by design — a whirring or grinding noise while the deck is moving is normal on almost every machine, and it stops when the incline reaches the set grade.
What is not normal is a squeak or a clunk that happens during incline changes and is new. That usually points at the pivot points of the lifting linkage, where the frame moves against the base. Those pivots take significant load and some are designed to be lubricated periodically, though not with the silicone that goes on the deck. Check the manual for what it specifies.
A grinding from the incline motor itself, or an incline that no longer reaches its set grade, or a machine that reports an incline error, is a service issue. It is also worth taking seriously because the incline mechanism carries the weight of the deck and the user.
Test it in isolation: with the machine on but the belt stopped, run the incline up and down through its range and listen. 7. Lubricants That Cause Damage
The instinct on hearing a squeak is to spray something at it, and on a treadmill that instinct causes more damage than the squeak ever would.
WD-40 and penetrating oils are the most common mistake. They are solvents rather than lubricants, they degrade the deck surface and the belt backing, and they attract dust that turns into an abrasive paste. A deck that has been sprayed with WD-40 is frequently ruined, and it is not recoverable by cleaning.
Household oils, cooking oils and general-purpose greasesdo not belong anywhere on a running deck either. They do not have the right viscosity, they oxidise, and they make an even better dust magnet than a solvent does.
Silicone sprays containing propellants or carriers are a subtler trap, because the label says silicone. 8. Noises That Mean Stop
Most squeaks are an annoyance. A few are a warning, and the difference is worth knowing before you spend an evening tightening bolts.
Stop using the machine if the noise comes with a burning or hot-plastic smell, if the breaker trips, if the belt keeps moving after the safety key is pulled, or if the machine surges.
